Every Child Matters is Back in Minnesota…and Happy to be Here!

Hi Minnesotans!

My name is Vanessa Young. I’m a St. Paul native, and I’ve had the opportunity to work in education for over 10 years, 5 of them in education reform. A Minnesota VOICE Fellow, I’m also the newly hired Organizer for Every Child Matters (ECM).  The education disparities I’ve seen in communities of color, have made me very passionate about creating change. And with your help, that’s what I hope to do in the next few years. In partnership, ECM and MN VOICE provide the issues framework and organizing background we need to make our voices heard about the needs of kids and working families in our state.

ECM advocates for kids and working families during elections with the goal of getting candidates and the public to better understand and seek solutions to problems like  the shortage of good, affordable early learning programs and the lack of supports to help parents give their kids a strong start in life. These include, among others, affordable childcare, and a livable wage . For instance, did you know that 74% of Minnesota children under the age of 6 have all available parents in the labor force?

Minnesota VOICE is building a coalition of non-partisan organizations working to achieve coordinated community engagement, which it defines as “the integration of community organizing, voter engagement, and leadership development.” The Minnesota VOICE Fellows program trains people from communities of color to put into play voter engagement programs.

This election year is a perfect time to implement our strategy for calling attention to kids’ issues during campaigns. Many candidates will be out and about in the months to come—presidential, congressional, and state. They all have the potential to make a difference in our lives and those of our kids. Let’s work together in urging them to put kids on their platforms and ensure that every child matters!
