Join Us in Welcoming ECM’s New Exec

ECM’s Board of Directors is pleased to announce the selection of Brian Ahlberg, former Chief of Staff to Sen. Tom Harkin, to lead the organization as President. Chair Nicole Lang, MD, said, “After an extensive search, we feel that Brian brings the leadership experience, passion for children’s advocacy, and vision needed to realize ECM’s mission.” He will be filling the vacancy created by founder Michael Petit’s retirement. Michael is very pleased to have Brian as his successor, saying, “The Board couldn’t have chosen a better person to move the organization forward.”

Brian’s resume includes more than 20 years of DC experience in management, legislative, advocacy, and communications positions. For the past ten years, he served as Sen. Tom Harkin’s Chief of Staff and before that as his Legislative Director, a position he also held with Sen. Paul Wellstone, for whom he worked nearly 10 years.

“I’m thrilled to join this important children’s advocacy organization. No country can succeed without devoting primary attention to what’s right for kids. That was a key premise to the political identity of my former bosses, and it’s a central debate on the landscape ahead. I look forward to meeting you all in the months ahead, whether in person or electronically. Let’s work together to move the kids’ agenda forward.”

And while Michael will be “retiring” to his home state of Maine, he will continue to advise ECM and remain a member of its Board. He also will continue to serve on the National Commission to Eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities as one of twelve Commissioners appointed by the President and congressional leaders.
