Good Morning,

There is still time! If you, or someone you know is 21 years of age or younger, get your creative juices flowing because June 20th is the deadline for the T-Shirt design competition! Don’t miss this opportunity to express your vision of why we as a community should “Vote for Kids”. You already feel passionately about this issue, so why not turn it into a visual message? At the same time, you have the possibility of winning a $50 gift certificate, and even if you don’t win, all entries receive one hour of community service.  See the ECM-LI section for further details.

Sincerely,

Shea Levin

Parent Awareness

Parenting Tip:

Brain Development: What You Should Know

Parents react in different ways to the brain development news. Many parents who hear it feel anxious about what they are doing. One mother of two girls, ages 2 and 4, expressed her feelings this way: “When I read the article in Time magazine, I was overwhelmed. I thought about things I should have done when my kids were smaller. I also thought, what should I be doing differently? But now I’m working, and it’s so hard to find the time.”

Although these feelings are understandable, remember that you may already be doing many of the things that are best for your child.

Nurturing your child’s brain development doesn’t require money, fancy toys or special equipment. It does require attention, loving care and knowing when to get help.

Basic Message:

*Good early care experiences expand your child’s capacity to learn

*Holding, cuddling and talking actually affect how your child’s brain grows

*Loving and supportive child care “programs” the brain to handle stress and control emotions

*The first years of life lay the groundwork for future experiences

*Reading to and singing with your child every day is a simple and effective way to help brain development

Help needed on LI

Needed: Volunteers to Help the Hungry

Island Harvest is seeking volunteers to help low and moderate income people to apply for the Food Stamp Program, known federally as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Currently only 30% of Long Islanders in need are receiving SNAP but many more may be eligible. Volunteers will be trained to provide application assistance and answer questions regarding the SNAP applications.

Please contact Emily Lehecka at (516) 294-8528 x 128 for more information.

*Spanish speakers are strongly encouraged to apply.

Sites Needed to Distribute Food for Seniors, Mothers and Kids

Catholic Charities is seeking sites in Long Beach, Elmont, Flanders, and Bridgehampton where they might distribute free food. Their program provides a box of food once a month to seniors whose income is less than $1174 a month for individuals or $1579 for couples through the Commodities Supplemental Food Program (formerly FAN).  Mothers in the second half of their postpartum year and children who are 5 or 6-years-old are also eligible.

Parents Convention

Partner with ECM-LI to Host a Parents’ Convention

Ecm-LI is looking for a partner with to have a“Parents Convention” in Suffolk County.  This convention will be similar to the Kids Convention in form and content.  Parents will have the chance to ask Candidates running for office where they stand on children’s issues and the event will also include a luncheon and entertainment will be provided for children. A partner would collaborate on cost, location, publicity and candidate attendance.

Date: Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011

This is a great way for candidates to know that voters are watching to see where they stand on kids’ issues. Please contact us asap, if you think this is something your organization can help with.
