On to the Caucus
Since I last wrote, we’ve been busy with Step Up for Kids, candidate events, and planning specifically for the next four months leading up to the caucus.
Last Tuesday, we kicked off our fall campaign to focus our work between now and the caucus on February 1, 2016. Thanks to those who joined us in Des Moines to start the conversation and identify opportunities to “Step Up” for kids. We also released our Step Up for Kids video. CLICK HERE to view the video.
The group shared valuable insights into the challenges facing children and families; provided suggestions to the future president on ways he or she can support children and working families, and identified how they will ‘step up’ for kids. The event was an opportunity for Every Child Matters in Iowa to begin to engage and mobilize voters. Think about ways you can be involved!
On Thursday, we attended the Caucus Consortium event with Governor Jeb Bush and were able to ask a question relating to the opportunity gap facing children and their ability to reach the American Dream. In his response, Bush noted that we are “sticky at the ends” and that the “middle is getting squeezed.” As far as he’s concerned, it is not a question of income inequality but one of social and economic mobility.
As he highlighted his policy solutions, Bush discussed assuring safe communities, strengthening families, and the importance of quality education including early childhood and the opportunity to engage business in supporting resources for literacy-based early learning.
