What are Iowa candidates saying about kids?
It’s that time of year again, children are back in school and Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial end to summer. It also marks the final stretch of the 2015-16 election season. The countdown is on with only 28 days before early voting starts in Iowa and 68 days before Election Day.
Every Child Matters in Iowa is committed to making children a priority with our candidates. During the Caucus season, we focused our work on the presidential candidates. As the election approaches, we are broadening our reach. Through collaborative work with the Children’s Policy Coalition in Iowa, we delivered a child focused candidate questionnaire to all of the Congressional candidates and the two Senate candidates. We are awaiting candidate responses and will share the information with voters. This is a good tool to identify where the candidates stand on six important children’s issues.
At the state level, we have been busy identifying co-sponsors to host forums across the state with the candidates running for seats in the Iowa Legislature. Next week, on Thursday, September 8th, 6-8 PM, we will host our first forum at the MICAH House, 1415 Avenue J, in Council Bluffs. The candidates invited cover SD 8, HD 15, and HD 16. CLICK HERE to access a flyer for the event.
The forums are designed to focus attention on children and working family issues in Iowa. Candidates will be asked questions designed by the co-sponsors of the events. The remaining questions will be from the audience. The forums are free and open to the public. Below is a schedule of confirmed dates:

We are thrilled with the events we have scheduled for this fall and hope they are useful for voters to interact with their local candidates, ask questions, and elevate children as a priority during the elections. The forums will not cover every race in the state which is why we have developed a Calendar of Events to host information from other sources too. Check it out and find an event near you. Ask the candidates how they will Invest in Kids!
