Working Families

Working and having a family shouldn’t be so hard. Stagnant incomes and workplace practices that pit being a parent against being a provider strain families and harm kids. Paid sick and family medical leave, access to affordable childcare and fair wages can help provide the economic security and flexibility that parents need to build their careers and support their families.

Child Care

To successfully provide for their families, working parents need the peace of mind that comes from knowing that their kids are in a safe and developmentally appropriate environment.

Unfortunately, the cost of child care has skyrocketed in recent years, and quality care is out of reach for most families. At the same time, many childcare workers earn minimum wage—not enough to provide for their own children.

Every Child Matters supports access to quality, affordable child care for all families and fair wages for childcare workers. It gives kids a great start and allows moms and dads to work—or better their lives through job training or higher education—so they can support their families.

Paid Sick and Family Medical Leave

Parents should never have to choose between their job and caring for their families. Too often though, hardworking Americans have to give up income they rely on, or even risk losing their job, when they have to take time off for caregiving responsibilities or pregnancy.

The current federal unpaid leave law, the Family and Medical Leave Act, doesn’t do enough to provide stability for working families.  This law protects less than half of American workers, and many of those who do qualify can’t afford to take leave without pay.

It is time for Congress and state legislatures to pass new laws to guarantee that workers will continue to earn a portion of their pay when they take time away from work to address a serious health concern or pregnancy, to care for a family member, or to care for a newborn or newly-adopted child.

Minimum Wage

Parents working full time jobs in the wealthiest country in the world should never be living in poverty. The minimum wage must be increased immediately and indexed to inflation so American workers can provide for their families year after year.

From fast food workers to childcare providers, hardworking Americans deserve to earn a fair, living wage.

Pay Equity

Women shouldn’t be shortchanged for their work, and girls shouldn’t grow up knowing that their talents and skills will be valued less than those of their male peers.

The massive wage disparity between women and men—even worse among minority women—is an injustice to mothers and harms kids. Simply guaranteeing that men and women get paid equally for the same work will go a long way to righting this wrong.
